Short and long bar feeders

Bar feeders for CNC lathes

LNS bar feeders load bars into the machine automatically, so your lathe keeps running unattended at the end of the shift, overnight and at weekends. We survey your machine, select the right model, install it and service it.

Basics

What does a bar feeder do?

The bar feeder stands behind the CNC lathe and pushes the bar forward through the spindle in step with the machining cycle. When a bar runs out, it removes the remnant and automatically loads the next one from the magazine. The operator only needs to refill the magazine from time to time.

This keeps the machine working at the end of the shift, overnight and at weekends, and one operator can run several machines. Guiding the bar in the spindle also reduces vibration, which means a better surface finish and longer tool life.

Applications

Fixed headstock CNC lathes

Swiss-type lathes (sliding headstock)

Small, medium and large batches

Unattended, overnight operation

Benefits

More machine time, fewer manual bar changes

One operator runs several machines

Consistent cycle time and quality

Less vibration with a guided bar

Comparison

Short or long bar feeder?

Both serve the same purpose, but each suits a different machine and production. The decision mostly comes down to bar length, batch size and the space behind the machine.

Selection

Four questions that decide the model.

The right bar feeder starts from the machine and the part being made. We look at these during the on-site survey before recommending a model.

01

What machine is it?

Fixed or sliding headstock, which make and which control. This tells us which family fits and what interface the machine needs.

02

What bars do you run?

The diameter range, the bar profile (round, hexagonal, square) and the material determine the guide channel and the spindle liners.

03

How large are the batches?

For large batches and long shifts a long bar feeder is more economical; for frequent changeovers and tight spaces, a short one.

04

At what speed?

At high speed, bar guiding is decisive: spindle liners and hydrodynamic guiding reduce vibration.

FAQ

What people usually ask about bar feeders.

If your question is not on the list, write or call us. With the machine type and bar diameters we can answer quickly.

Send a question

Which machines suit a short one, and which a long one?

Swiss-type lathes and large batches usually call for a long bar feeder; conventional CNC lathes, small and medium batches or limited space often favour a short one. We give our final recommendation after surveying the machine.

Can it be fitted to an older machine?

On most CNC lathes, yes, provided the control handles the bar feeder signals. Before quoting, we check compatibility from the machine drawings and the control.

What is a spindle liner, and when is it worth using?

A spindle liner matches the spindle bore to the bar diameter, so the bar does not vibrate even at high speed. If the bar is much thinner than the spindle bore, it is almost always worth using.

How long does it take to change to another diameter?

It depends on the model. On the QLS 65 short bar feeder, diameter changeover takes 15 seconds; on most long bar feeders, a partial changeover takes about 2 minutes. The Express 346 evo sets itself up once the diameter is entered.

Who installs and services it?

Our own service team installs it, interfaces it with the machine and trains the operators. Spare parts come from stock, and if there is a fault we also help by phone and remote access.

Which machines can it be interfaced with?

LNS bar feeders can be interfaced with machines from most lathe builders, for example Mazak, Doosan, Okuma, DMG MORI, Haas, Citizen, Star and Tornos. We handle the interfacing and wiring.

Do you overhaul old bar feeders?

Yes. We also overhaul and upgrade older LNS bar feeders, and supply wear parts from stock.

How much does a bar feeder cost?

The price depends on the model, the bar diameter range and the interface the machine needs. Send us the machine type and the bar diameters, and we will send a quote.
